Phra Tamnak Mountain Viewpoint
จุดชมวิวเขาพระตำหนัก
Pratumnak Hill rises to 98 metres above Pattaya, the city’s highest natural point, and Phra Tamnak Mountain Viewpoint sits at its summit. Entry is free, and a paved road runs almost to the top — most visitors drive or take a songthaew rather than climb.
Experience
A flight of roughly 100 naga-flanked steps leads from the car park up to the main viewing terrace, where the hill opens into a full 360-degree sweep: Jomtien Beach to the south, the curved sweep of Pattaya Bay and its high-rise skyline to the north, and Koh Larn sitting offshore when the haze lifts. The same hilltop holds the Big Buddha temple, Wat Phra Yai — an 18-metre gilded Buddha image built in 1977 — so the viewpoint and the temple make one natural stop rather than two separate trips.
- Entry fee: Free
- Elevation: 98 m — Pattaya’s highest natural point
- Access: Paved road to near the summit, plus a ~100-step naga staircase to the main terrace
- Views: Pattaya Bay, Jomtien Beach, Koh Larn (clear days)
- Shares the hill with: Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha temple)
Atmosphere & Timing
The terraces stay quieter than Pattaya’s beachfront, drawing photographers at golden hour and locals on weekend picnics more than tour groups. Because the Big Buddha temple sits right beside the viewpoint, dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees are expected if you walk over to the shrine.
Insider Tip: Arrive for sunrise rather than sunset — the morning light over the bay is clearer before the day’s haze builds up, and the car park is nearly empty before 7 AM.
Watch out: Shade is limited on the main terrace. Bring water and sun protection if you’re visiting around midday.
Practical
A car, motorbike taxi, or songthaew from central Pattaya reaches the summit car park directly; the drive itself involves a series of tight switchbacks. From there it’s a short walk up the staircase to the viewing terrace. No entry fee applies to either the viewpoint or the adjacent temple grounds.
