Phrathat Don Kaeo

Phrathat Don Kaeo is a square brick-and-laterite chedi standing on its own small, round island inside the Nong Han Kumphawapi wetland, in Kumphawapi district about 43 km south of Udon Thani town. Its stepped, tapering profile deliberately echoes Phra That Phanom, the revered stupa over in Nakhon Phanom province — this is a Lao-influenced Isan design, not a Khmer prang, despite what older write-ups of this site sometimes claim. A moat formed by the surrounding wetland rings the island itself, so the chedi appears to rise straight out of the water when levels are high.

Local tradition explains the site’s origin: a group of monks returning from paying respects at Phra That Phanom stopped here when one of their party fell gravely ill and died. The others cremated him on the spot and built a stupa to enshrine his relics, giving the site its long-standing status as a place of pilgrimage independent of its more famous namesake upriver. The boundary stones (bai sema) and stone posts scattered around the chedi are dated to roughly the 12th–13th century, while local estimates put the core structure at well over a thousand years old — making this one of the older religious monuments in this part of Udon Thani, if a much quieter one than Phra That Phanom itself.

Insider Tip: Come in the dry season (roughly November–April) if you want to walk right up to the base of the chedi — during and just after the rainy season, the wetland’s water level rises enough that the island is only reachable by boat, and access can be unpredictable.

Watch out: There’s no on-site museum or English signage explaining the founding legend — what you get is the monument itself and the wetland setting, so this suits visitors who want a quiet historical stop rather than a curated exhibit.

Bring water and sun protection; there’s little shade around the open chedi platform, and the walk from the shore (or the boat landing, depending on water level) has no cover.
