Red Lotus Sea (Nong Han Kumphawapi)
ทะเลบัวแดง หนองหานกุมภวาปี
Every December through February, red and pink lotus flowers cover long stretches of Nong Han Lake in Kumphawapi district, about 40 minutes’ drive south of Udon Thani city. Local longtail boats cut narrow channels through the blooms so you can photograph them at water level — it’s one of Isan’s best-known seasonal natural sights, and the reason to come is genuinely simple: dense fields of lotus flowers stretching to the horizon, best seen from a boat in the early morning.
Boats leave from piers around the lake, most commonly Ban Diam. Small boats seating 2-3 people run about 150 THB per person; larger boats for 6-10 people cost around 600 THB total, split between the group. There’s no entry fee to reach the lakeshore itself — the boat trip is the only real cost, and also the only way to get in among the flowers rather than viewing them from the bank. Trips typically run an hour or so, weaving through channels between clusters of lotus pads while operators point out the best photo angles.
Insider Tip: Arrive by 6:00-6:30 AM if you want the classic shots — flowers open fully in the cool early hours and start closing again by mid-morning. A 9 AM start still catches blooms, but the light is harsher and some flowers will already be folding shut. Whatever time you go, book your boat directly at the pier rather than through a third party to avoid inflated prices.
Watch out: This is one of several lakes in Thailand marketed as a “red lotus sea” or “Talay Bua Daeng” — a much larger Nong Han Lake near Sakon Nakhon, about 150 km away, runs the same seasonal bloom and is sometimes confused with this one online. Double-check you’re booking transport to Kumphawapi, Udon Thani, if that’s the one you want.
Outside the December-February peak, the lake is far less photogenic — lotus coverage thins out and some operators scale back boat services, so this isn’t a year-round destination in the way some listings imply. Bring sun protection and something waterproof for cameras and phones, since you’ll be on open water with little shade.
- Entry fee: Free to the lakeshore; boat rides from about 150 THB/person (small boat) or 600 THB (large boat, shared)
- Best time: December–February, 06:00–09:30 for fully open blooms
- Getting there: ~40-minute drive south from Udon Thani city to the Kumphawapi piers
- Facilities: Parking and restrooms at the main pier
- Don’t confuse with: The larger Nong Han Lake red lotus season near Sakon Nakhon, a separate lake ~150 km away
Pair the trip with Phrathat Don Kaeo, a temple in the same Kumphawapi district, or Nong Prachak Public Park back in Udon Thani town if you want a slower second stop after an early boat ride.
