Doi Pha Mon Agricultural Center
ศูนย์ส่งเสริมการเกษตรดอยผาหม่น
Doi Pha Mon Agricultural Center sits over 1,000 metres up in Phu Chi Fa’s Thoeng district, Chiang Rai — 113 rai of cold-climate flower fields and crop trials run by the province’s highland agriculture office since it opened in November 1992. This isn’t a research farm in the abstract sense: the main draw is walking through blocks of tulips, lilies, and red salvia in bloom, laid out like a highland flower park rather than a laboratory.
Alongside the flower plots, demonstration beds grow orchids, rosemary and other aromatic plants, plus specialty crops the center promotes to local farmers — avocado, arabica coffee, and macadamia among them. Signposted sections explain what’s being trialled and why the elevation suits it. A small shop sells produce and coffee grown on site, and there’s a community stall for goods from surrounding villages. None of it feels manicured for tourists; the paths and plots are still doing their working-farm job between visitors.
Cool air is the constant here — the center’s whole reason for existing is that this elevation supports plants that won’t grow in lowland Chiang Rai. From November to February, the same seasonal mist that draws sunrise crowds to Phu Chi Fa settles over the flower blocks in the early morning, backing tulip and lily colour against grey valley cloud. It’s a quieter, slower stop than the cliff-edge viewpoints nearby.
Entry is free, and the center opens daily from 09:00 to 16:00. Reaching it from Chiang Rai city takes two to two-and-a-half hours by mountain road through Thoeng district, so it works better as part of a full Phu Chi Fa trip than a standalone errand. Basic on-site lodging and camping mean you can stay over rather than drive back down the same day. Bring water and sun protection for the outdoor plots, and comfortable shoes — paths are gravel and packed earth, not paved.
Insider Tip: Combine the visit with Doi Pha Tang, a ridge viewpoint in the same touring area — both are far enough off the main road that a single trip up the mountain covers them efficiently.
Watch out: Facilities are basic — a small coffee shop is the only food on site, so eat in Thoeng town on the way up if you need a proper meal.
