Phu Thai Ethnic group at Ban None Hom

Ban None Hom is a Phu Thai community about 13km from Sakon Nakhon city, where families who crossed the Mekong from Laos roughly a century ago still weave cotton and silk on wooden looms. General access to the village is free, and it’s registered as a community-based tourism site — the fuller cultural program, including weaving demonstrations, dance, and a traditional welcome meal, runs by advance arrangement rather than a fixed public schedule.

The community traces its roots to Phu Thai migrants from the Phu Wanakadaeng area of Laos, who crossed the Mekong River and followed the Phu Phan mountain range south more than a hundred years ago before settling in what’s now Non Hom subdistrict, Mueang Sakon Nakhon district. That migration history — rather than centuries of unbroken settlement — is what shapes the village’s identity today.

Weaving remains the community’s best-known craft: women work at traditional wooden looms producing cotton and silk textiles in geometric patterns using natural dyes, a skill passed down through generations. Groups who arrange a visit in advance can also see Phu Thai dance performances and demonstrations of muay boran, an older regional style of boxing, and can book the phaa laeng — a traditional communal welcome meal — through the village’s Demonstration Marketing Center.

From Sakon Nakhon city, follow Highway 223 toward Na Kae for about 13km, then take the signed 2km turn-off to the village.
