Saithip Butterfly Garden

Saithip Butterfly Garden is commonly described as Asia’s largest butterfly garden, built around a flight enclosure large enough that thousands of butterflies move freely among flowering plants rather than a handful in a glass box. It sits just off Highway 36 near the Bang Phra market turn-off, on the road toward Khao Kheow Open Zoo, in Si Racha district — administratively part of Bang Saen’s wider tourist area even though it’s inland from the beach itself. Entry is 100 THB for adults, 50 THB for children, daily from 08:30 to 17:30.

The visit starts with a butterfly museum explaining the life cycle from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult, with species panels covering both Thai and imported varieties. From there, a walk-through farm area recreates a semi-natural habitat — flowering vines, nectar plants, and shaded paths where butterflies land close enough to photograph without a telephoto lens. A separate bee museum next door explains honey production and hive management, and an orchid garden rounds out the grounds. A shop near the exit sells honey and butterfly-themed souvenirs.

Insider Tip: Butterflies are cold-blooded and slow down in the early morning chill and the worst of the midday heat — mid-morning, once the sun’s up but before noon, is when the flight enclosure is busiest.

The garden works well as a family stop rather than a standalone destination: it’s a manageable size, mostly shaded, and the museum panels give kids something to read between enclosures. Bring a camera with a reasonably close focus distance, since the butterflies often land within arm’s reach rather than staying up in the canopy. Combine it with a Khao Kheow Open Zoo visit on the same day, since both sit along the same stretch of Highway 36 — allow an hour or so here, more if you linger in the bee museum and orchid garden.

Practically, this is a self-guided visit rather than a tour — there’s no fixed route through the enclosure, so you can double back to a photogenic corner or skip straight to the flight area if the museum panels aren’t your interest. Bang Phra Reservoir, a few kilometres away, is a quieter option if you want a break from the crowds at the butterfly garden’s better-known neighbors.
