Sala Mai Thai

Sala Mai Thai is a wooden exhibition hall on the campus of Khon Kaen Industrial and Community Education College in Chonnabot district, about an hour’s drive south of Khon Kaen city. Built to mark Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday and formally known as the Chaloemphrakiat 60 Phansa Building, it houses a small but focused silk museum, and it’s free to enter.

Chonnabot is one of Isan’s best-known mudmee silk-weaving districts, and the hall exists to document that craft rather than simply showcase architecture. Displays walk through the full production chain — dyeing raw silk thread, tying the resist patterns that give mudmee its ikat-style motifs, and weaving on traditional looms — alongside a collection of antique textiles and the tools used to make them. The building itself is a traditional elevated Thai timber structure, joined without nails, which puts the exhibits inside a fitting setting rather than a generic display case.

Watch out: This is not the same building as Khon Kaen’s larger city-centre museums — it’s a single-purpose exhibition hall in a rural college campus, worth an hour at most. Set expectations accordingly if you’re coming primarily for the silk museum rather than passing through Chonnabot anyway.
