Saphan Lek Khok Khanun

Saphan Lek Khok Khanun is a 200-metre iron footbridge across the Takua Pa River, built in 1968 from steel salvaged off decommissioned tin-dredging boats after the town’s mining industry wound down. It’s free to cross, open at all hours, and still used daily by local motorbike and foot traffic.

Takua Pa was once southern Thailand’s biggest tin-mining port. When the dredgers stopped working, their steel went into this bridge rather than the scrapyard — a practical reuse of mining-era material that makes the bridge a physical remnant of that boom, not something built for tourism after the fact.

Crossing it, the metal deck flexes slightly underfoot and motorbikes share the same narrow lane as pedestrians, so single-file crossing is normal rather than an inconvenience. The views along the way take in the river, patches of jungle on the banks, and older wooden houses set back from the water — a quieter look at Takua Pa than its restored shophouse streets nearby.

Insider Tip: Photograph from the riverbank rather than mid-span if there’s motorbike traffic — the bridge is narrow enough that stopping for a photo blocks the lane for someone’s actual commute.

Watch out: The deck gets slippery when wet, and there’s no continuous railing along the full span — mind your footing, especially with kids in tow.

The bridge sits inside Takua Pa town, about 30 km north of Khao Lak. Pair it with Takua Pa Old Town a short walk or ride away — five streets of Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the same tin-boom era, with a Sunday evening walking street when the main road closes to traffic. Time your bridge visit for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and softer light on the water.
