Suan Hin Pha Ngam

Suan Hin Pha Ngam is a limestone rock garden in Nong Hin district, nicknamed “Kunming of Thailand” for its resemblance to the stone forests of Yunnan province in China. Weathered grey pillars rise out of green grassland, believed to have formed under an ancient seabed before uplift and erosion carved them into their current shapes. It’s not to be confused with Pa Hin Ngam National Park, a different and much larger park in Chaiyaphum famous for its Siam tulip meadows — the similar names are a genuine source of mix-ups online.

Marked paths wind between and through the formations, with several named features along the way: a rock shaped like a dinosaur, a narrow crawl-through cave called Tham Orathai, a maze-like cluster of pillars locals call Khao Wong Kot, and a long ridge nicknamed the “Great Wall of China” for its resemblance to the real thing. Some sections require ducking through gaps or climbing over low rock, so it’s more of a scramble than a flat garden stroll in places. An optional tram or cart runs for visitors who’d rather not cover the full loop on foot, though the main paths are walkable independently.

Wildflowers appear in the grassland around the rocks during the cooler months, adding colour against the grey stone, though the formations themselves are the draw year-round. There’s minimal shade across the site, so midday visits in the hot season get uncomfortable fast.

Insider Tip: Pair the visit with Phu Pa Po nearby, a viewpoint popular for sunrise — arriving there first thing and moving on to Suan Hin Pha Ngam once the morning heat starts building makes for a more comfortable day than doing the rock garden at midday.

Watch out: The rock surfaces get slippery when wet and some passages are narrow enough to require ducking or turning sideways — wear proper closed shoes rather than sandals, and skip the crawl-through sections if you’re not comfortable in tight spaces. Getting there means a private vehicle; there’s no public transport route into Nong Hin district’s rural roads from Loei town.
