Phu Pa Po

Phu Pa Po earns its local nickname — “Fuji of Loei” — honestly: Phu Ho, the flat-topped peak visible from the fourth of its four viewpoints, has the same truncated-summit silhouette as Mount Fuji, particularly when sea fog pools in the valleys below it. At roughly 900 metres above sea level in Nong Hin district, Loei province, it’s a genuinely different mountain from the karst-cliff “Guilin of Thailand” comparisons pinned on Tham Phothisat elsewhere in the province — the resemblance here is about shape, not scenery type, and there’s no Mekong River or Laos view from this summit. Nong Hin sits well south of Loei’s river-facing districts, so what you get instead is grassland, savanna and mountain ranges running to the horizon.
Four viewpoints spread along the summit trail, spaced roughly 200 to 300 metres apart, each framing a different angle of the surrounding ridgelines. The savanna grassland underfoot shifts character with the seasons — golden and dry through the cool and hot months, green through the rains, and wrapped in cool mist during December and January mornings. The Ban Pha Wai community runs the access road up the mountain with modified pickup trucks known locally as “eetak,” a tourism enterprise that’s turned the mountain into a steady income source for the village at its base.
The mood at the top is quiet rather than crowded — this isn’t a mountain with tour-bus traffic, and mornings especially have a stillness that comes from genuine remoteness rather than staged calm. Wind moves through the grass, and the ridgelines fade into haze on hazier days.
Insider Tip: Push on to viewpoint 4 rather than stopping at the first one you reach — it’s the only spot with the full 360-degree panorama and the clearest look at Phu Ho’s Fuji-like profile.
Visit November through February for the clearest air and coolest hiking conditions; bring a jacket, since temperatures at this elevation drop well below what you’d expect at valley level, especially before sunrise. The drive from Loei town takes about an hour on winding mountain roads, and sturdy shoes matter on the rockier stretches between viewpoints.
