V.C. Garden

V.C. Garden — known locally as Suan Lung Wut, “Uncle Wut’s Garden” — is a plant nursery in Nong Bua subdistrict, Phu Rua district, one of the coldest and highest parts of Loei province. Entry to walk the grounds is free, and its reputation rests on one plant: it was the first nursery in Thailand to successfully propagate sapparotsi, an ornamental bromeliad known locally as “coloured pineapple,” and has grown into the country’s largest producer of it.
Rows of bromeliad varieties fill much of the growing area, alongside Dendrobium Nobile orchids, echeveria succulents — sold locally as “stone roses” — and azaleas that put on their best show during the cool season. This is a working nursery rather than a landscaped tourist garden: paths run between growing beds and sale tables rather than through curated viewpoints, and buying a plant to take home is as much the point of visiting as looking at what’s already planted.
Insider Tip: Prices for cuttings and potted plants are low compared to what the same varieties fetch in Bangkok garden centres — if you’re driving rather than flying home, it’s worth budgeting boot space.
Phu Rua district regularly records some of the lowest temperatures in Thailand, and V.C. Garden is busiest from November to February when the cool weather suits both the plants and the domestic tourists who come specifically for the chill. Outside those months the garden still operates, just with less crowd and less bloom.
- Entry fee: Free to walk the grounds; plants sold separately at low prices
- Hours: Daily 09:00–17:00
- Best season: November–February (Phu Rua’s cool season)
- Known for: Pioneering commercial bromeliad (sapparotsi) propagation in Thailand
- Location: Nong Bua subdistrict, Phu Rua district, Loei
Getting here means driving into Phu Rua district — there’s no meaningful public transport option, so a car, motorbike or arranged transfer from Loei town is the practical route. Combine the visit with Phu Ruea National Park and its Yot Phu Rua viewpoint, both a short drive away and busiest during the same cool-season window.
