Swan Cave is an underground stream cave inside Khao Nan National Park, in Tambon Krung Ching, Nopphitam district. Unlike a typical walk-in cave, a park ranger has to guide every visit — call the park office in advance, ideally about a week ahead, so staff can schedule someone to take you.

The route follows the stream for roughly 300 metres, past stalactites and stalagmites shaped by the water over time, to a second-tier waterfall that’s the main destination. Getting there involves ducking under low sections, crawling through tight spots, and climbing over wet rock — this isn’t a stroll on a boardwalk. A colony of bats lives in the cave but reportedly keeps clear of visitors rather than causing any trouble. Because the whole route runs along an active stream, park staff often restrict or cancel trips during the rainy season when flash-flood risk rises.

Watch out: this cave is not the free, casual walk-in some listings describe. It sits inside a national park with its own gate fee, and access depends entirely on a ranger being available to guide you — turning up unannounced is likely to mean a wasted trip.

Insider Tip: Wear a head-mounted headlamp rather than carrying a torch, since you’ll need both hands free for the climbing sections, and leave phones and wallets in the car — the wading stretches make dropped valuables a real risk, not a theoretical one.

Key Facts:
  • Location: inside Khao Nan National Park, Tambon Krung Ching, Nopphitam district
  • Access: ranger-guided only — call ahead, ideally a week in advance, to arrange
  • Entry fee: standard Khao Nan NP gate fee, roughly 40 THB (Thai adults) / 200 THB (foreign adults), reduced for children
  • Route: about 300 metres of wading, ducking, and climbing to reach the second-tier waterfall
  • Season: dry season is safest; rainy-season trips are often paused for flash-flood risk

Krung Ching Waterfall, the park’s better-known highlight, is in the same subdistrict and makes a natural add-on if you’re already arranging a park visit. Visit Nakhon Si Thammarat for the rest of the province.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a guide to visit Swan Cave?
Yes, a park ranger has to lead every visit. Call the Khao Nan National Park office in advance, ideally about a week ahead, so staff can schedule someone to take you in.
Is entry free?
No. The standard Khao Nan National Park gate fee applies on top of arranging the guide — around 40 THB for Thai adults and 200 THB for foreign adults, with reduced child rates, payable at the park office.
What should I bring?
Closed-toe shoes with grip, long sleeves to avoid scrapes in tight passages, and a head-mounted headlamp so both hands stay free for climbing. Leave your phone and other valuables in the car — the route involves wading and there's real risk of dropping things in the water.
Can I visit during the rainy season?
Rangers often restrict or cancel cave trips in the rains because of flash-flood risk in the stream passages. Call ahead before travelling if you're planning a visit outside the dry season.
What's actually inside the cave?
An underground stream running past stalactites and stalagmites, more than one waterfall along the route (the second tier is the main draw, reached after about 300 metres of wading, ducking, and climbing), and a bat colony that keeps its distance from visitors.
