Krung Ching Waterfall

Krung Ching Waterfall drops through several tiers inside Khao Luang National Park, with the tallest single drop reaching around 100 metres. Reaching it takes a real hike, not a stroll from a car park: the forest trail from the park checkpoint runs about 3.7 km each way through rainforest — 7.4 km round trip — so allow at least 2-3 hours and set off well before mid-afternoon.

The trail climbs steadily through tall dipterocarp forest, crossing streams and root-tangled sections that get slick fast once it rains. Hornbill calls carry through the canopy, and the air holds the damp, mineral smell of a forest that gets serious rainfall most of the year. Pools form at several points along the lower tiers, cool enough for a swim after the climb, though currents strengthen noticeably after heavy rain and it’s worth checking with park staff before getting in. The upper viewing area, reached only after the full trek, is where the waterfall’s scale is obvious — spray drifting off the rock face, the sound audible well before you see it.

This is a working national park trail, not a manicured tourist path, and the park closes it seasonally: Khao Luang National Park shuts this section from 1 October to 15 December each year, largely for flash-flood and trail-safety reasons during the wettest weeks of the monsoon. Outside that window, the best flow is typically toward the end of the rainy season, roughly June through September, when the falls are running hard but the closure hasn’t started yet.

Insider Tip: Carry more water than you think you need — there’s no shop on the trail, and the humidity under the canopy makes the 7.4 km round trip more draining than the distance suggests.

Watch out: Don’t plan a visit for early October expecting the falls to be open — the closure starts on the 1st regardless of conditions, and reopening in mid-December can slip if the trail needs repair work.
