Tham Fun Waterfall

Tham Fun Waterfall flows over a long sandstone shelf inside Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary in Bueng Kan province, near Ban Phu Sawat in Nong Doen subdistrict. Water channels down narrow grooves cut into the rock, spreading into small, natural round pools that locals liken to bathtubs — a popular spot for soaking rather than a single dramatic plunge pool. There’s a large and a small cascade on site, both fed by the same sandstone cliff.

Because it sits inside a wildlife sanctuary rather than open community land, access comes with an entry fee — the sanctuary’s published waterfall-zone rate is 30 THB for Thai adults (20 THB children) and 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB children), collected 08:30-16:30. The waterfall zones open seasonally, with the sanctuary announcing each year’s start around mid-June, and rangers still close the site at short notice during heavy rain and flash-flood risk — so check conditions before making the trip during storms, even though rainy season is also when the falls look their best. Food vendors and facilities mostly appear on weekends and holidays; on a weekday, bring what you need.

The setting is genuinely quiet compared to Bueng Kan’s better-known stops like Wat Phu Thok — dense forest, few other visitors outside holiday weekends, and the sound of water over rock rather than crowds. Insider Tip: Go on a weekday if you can; Thai holiday weekends (particularly around Buddhist Lent) draw enough local family groups that the smaller pools fill up fast.

Watch out: The sandstone gets slippery when wet, and the access road can turn muddy after rain — a vehicle with reasonable clearance, or a local driver, makes the last few kilometres easier. Because the sanctuary can close the site during flash-flood conditions, don’t plan a visit here as the single fixed point of a rainy-season itinerary; have a backup in mind.
