Thana Market runs every day, 09:00-17:00, along the Nakhon Chai Si River in Nakhon Pathom — a working trading community, not a weekend-only tourist event. Its roots go back over 140 years, to the Rama I era when settlers built trading posts along the riverbank; by King Rama V’s reign it had grown into one of the province’s busiest river ports. Most of the wooden shophouses lining the market today date from around 90 years ago and are still in daily use.

Vendors sell what a riverside community actually needs — fresh produce, household goods, and cooked food rather than souvenirs aimed at tourists. Food stalls turn out local specialties: stewed duck, duck rice, shrimp wontons, grilled fish with sweet fish sauce, and tapioca balls, alongside baked goods and seasonal fruit. The yellow and green wooden shophouses along the river make for good photos, and a few riverside spots sell fish food for feeding the fish that gather near the pier. Trade is steady through the day, but the market picks up noticeably in the afternoon as more stalls and restaurants open for the evening crowd.

Because it serves locals first, prices are straightforward and there’s little of the tourist-market haggling you’d find elsewhere. Most vendors speak limited English, so pointing at what you want works fine. The market’s development plans include new water-based routes connecting it to nearby temples, which should make boat access easier in future — for now, arriving by road is the standard route.
