Rattiya City

Rattiya City (เมืองรัตติยา / Muang Rattiya) is not an archaeological site despite its name — it’s a modern riverside market in Bang Len, Nakhon Pathom, built in 2019 with Ayutthaya-period-style architecture that also serves as a standing film set. Entry is free, open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 08:00-17:30.

Hook

Developer Rattiya Srisongwannawa built the site on roughly 25-50 rai (10-20 acres) along the Tha Chin River, styling it after the walled cities of the Ayutthaya era. Its centrepiece, a whitewashed fortress gate known as Tha Pratuchai, has been used as a filming location for period dramas, including the TV series “Sri Ayodhya.” Locals describe it as a contemporary market wearing historical costume rather than a preserved heritage site.

Experience

Inside, more than 200 shops and food stalls line the riverside walkways, selling local produce, snacks, and souvenirs. Visitors can walk the fortress-wall sections, cross a red suspension bridge, ride riverside swings, watch an artificial waterfall feature, or cycle along the river path. Afternoon shows — reported to include sword demonstrations and fire performances by local students — run on operating days, though schedules aren’t fixed and are worth checking locally before visiting.

Insider Tip: Go for the riverside walk and the photo backdrop of Tha Pratuchai rather than expecting a historical museum experience — the value here is atmosphere and market shopping, not artefacts.

Atmosphere & timing

This is a weekend-only destination — it doesn’t operate as a daily market, so a weekday visit will find it closed. Saturday and Sunday mornings are calmer than afternoons, when the market fills with day-tripping families from Bangkok and nearby Nakhon Pathom towns.

Watch out: Public transport from Bangkok is limited to a single minivan route (Pata-Bang Len from Pinklao), so plan around its 06:30-19:00 schedule if you’re not driving — there’s no train or regular bus service directly to the site.
