Noen Sai Ngam (Grand Sand Dune)

Noen Sai Ngam is a stretch of coastal sand dunes in Pathio district, Chumphon — marketed locally as Thailand’s longest and tallest natural dune formation, covering roughly 2,000 rai (about 320 hectares) along 10km of shoreline. The bulk-imported title on this page, “The Most Distinct Thai Sand Dune,” is actually a day-tour product name, not what anyone here calls the place. A wooden boardwalk crosses the sand to a viewpoint over the beach, and a roughly 1km interpretation trail loops through the dune field on laid stone paving.

The dunes built up from monsoon storms pushing sand inland along this stretch of coast, and the result looks genuinely out of place in tropical Chumphon — pale, rippled sand instead of the province’s usual green. Outside the rainy season the exposed sand and sparse scrub give it a dry, almost desert-like character that photographs well in the low light of early morning or late afternoon. Local operators sometimes run ATV rental and a sand slide near the main access point, though neither is guaranteed to be set up on any given day.

Watch out: there’s no shade on the open dune field and the sand reflects heat back up at you. Midday visits in the dry season get genuinely uncomfortable — bring water and sun protection, and wear closed shoes rather than sandals, since loose sand gets everywhere otherwise.

Insider Tip: the boardwalk viewpoint gives you the classic photo without the walk — if you’re short on time or energy, skip the full interpretation trail and head straight there instead.

Entry is free, daily 08:00-18:00, with no ticket gate — this is open coastal land rather than a managed park. The site sits in Pak Khlong subdistrict, roughly 25km from Chumphon town along the coastal road toward Ao Bo Mao and Hat Bang Berd; a rented car or motorbike from town is the practical way to reach it, since public transport doesn’t run out this far. Thung Maha Bay Community Tourism, also in Pathio district, is a short drive further down the same coast if you want boat trips and snorkelling to round out the day.
