Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach

Thong Nai Pan Yai is the larger of Thong Nai Pan’s twin bays on Koh Phangan’s northeast coast, paired with the smaller, calmer Thong Nai Pan Noi just over the headland. The horseshoe-shaped bay has a wide run of sand and a gentle seabed slope that makes it a safe, easy swim rather than a snorkelling destination — the water’s clear enough for a good float, but this isn’t a reef stop. While Hat Rin further south draws the full moon party crowds, this stretch of coast stays low-key, with just enough beachfront restaurants and bungalow operations to keep a visit comfortable.

Kayaks are rentable near the main beach access for exploring the coves along the headland separating the two bays, and the rocky points at each end of the beach work well for sunset photos. Several beachfront kitchens serve fresh seafood — grilled fish is the reliable order almost anywhere along here. Because Yai has more budget accommodation than Noi, it tends to draw longer-stay travellers rather than day-trippers, which keeps the pace unhurried even in high season.

Watch out: the road from Thong Sala, though now paved, is still steep and switchbacked in places. It was a rough dirt track requiring 4WD or a bumpy songthaew ride not that long ago, and the grade hasn’t changed even though the surface has — inexperienced scooter riders should take it slowly, particularly with a passenger or luggage.

Insider Tip: walk over to Thong Nai Pan Noi for dinner variety — Yai’s food scene is fine but thinner than its smaller neighbour’s, and it’s a short walk or scooter ride between the two.

The calmest sea conditions run roughly December through August; the Gulf coast’s monsoon concentrates October-December, when rain and rougher water are more likely. Bring reef-safe sunscreen regardless of season — the shallow water gives little UV protection. For a longer day out, Namtok Than Sadet and Bottle Beach are both a short trip up the coast.
