Ao Bo Mao is a public beach on the Gulf of Thailand coast in Pathio district, Chumphon — not the Andaman side, so don’t expect limestone cliffs or turquoise karst-island water. What you get instead is a roughly 3 km crescent of pale sand backed by rubber plantations and low coastal forest, ranked among Chumphon’s quieter beaches rather than its headline ones.

Swimming is the main activity, though water clarity varies — the Bang Mun river empties into the bay and can cloud the water, particularly after rain. Snorkellers after clear water are better off taking a boat out to the Mu Ko Chumphon islands offshore, including Ko Khai (Egg Island), roughly 15 minutes out by boat and known for its coral and a developing giant clam sanctuary. Close to shore, the bay is calm and shallow enough for an easy kayak paddle.

Key Facts:
  • Coast: Gulf of Thailand (not Andaman)
  • Length: Roughly 3 km of sand
  • Facilities: None on-site — bring water and supplies
  • Nearby: Boat trips to Ko Khai (Egg Island) and the Mu Ko Chumphon islands, about 15 minutes offshore
  • Getting there: 30-minute drive from Chumphon town, then a short walk through rubber plantations

There are no beach clubs, jet-ski rentals, or vendor stalls here — the trade-off for the quiet is that you need to bring everything with you. Hornbills and other coastal birds are common in the tree line behind the beach, and outside weekends it’s realistic to have long stretches of sand to yourself.

Insider Tip: Skip the swim if it’s rained in the past day or two — river runoff from the Bang Mun leaves the water noticeably cloudier than normal. Check conditions before committing to the drive out.

Watch out: With no facilities and no lifeguard, treat this as a self-sufficient trip — bring water, sun protection, and cash for any boat trips arranged locally, since there’s nowhere to buy supplies once you’re at the beach.

For the island trip, Mu Ko Chumphon is the marine park offshore worth arranging a boat for, or head back into Chumphon town to browse the Chumphon Night Market for seafood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ao Bo Mao on the Andaman coast?
No — it faces the Gulf of Thailand, on the eastern side of the peninsula in Pathio district, Chumphon. There are no limestone cliffs or karst islands here, just a long sand crescent backed by rubber plantations and low coastal forest.
Is the water clear for snorkelling?
Not reliably. The Bang Mun river empties into the bay and can leave the water cloudy, especially after rain. For clearer water, take a boat from the bay out to the Mu Ko Chumphon islands offshore.
What facilities are there?
None on-site — no shops, restrooms, or shade structures. Bring your own water, snacks, and sun protection, and expect a quiet, undeveloped beach rather than a resort strip.
How do I get there?
About a 30-minute drive from Chumphon town, followed by a short walk through rubber plantations to reach the sand. A car or motorbike is the practical way in — there's no public transport to the bay itself.
