Ton Panan Waterfall

Ton Panan Waterfall drops through a series of pools in Thung Nui subdistrict, Khuan Kalong district, about 39km from Satun town, fed year-round by streams off Khao Kaming mountain. It’s a community-run site, not part of the Talay Ban National Park system in neighbouring Khuan Don district — so the park gate fee charged at Thale Ban’s own waterfalls, like Ya Roid Waterfall, doesn’t apply here. Entry is free.

Khuan Kalong sits inland from Satun’s better-known island coast, in rubber and fruit-orchard country rather than the limestone karst that draws most visitors to the province. That inland setting is part of the appeal: far fewer day-trippers make it out this far compared with the boat trips to Ko Lipe or Ko Tarutao.

The falls step down over several tiers, each pooling into a swimming hole shaded by forest canopy. Local operators have added light rafting and tubing runs on the stream in recent years, mostly active when water levels are high after rain. The walk in from the car park follows a dirt trail that can turn slick and muddy in the wet season, crossing a couple of stream sections along the way.

Weekday visits mean you’ll likely have a pool mostly to yourself; weekends and Thai public holidays bring local families with packed lunches and inflatable rings. There’s no admission booth, no gift shop, and no changing rooms — bring what you need, because the site itself provides only the water and the trees.

Insider Tip: Rainy season (May-November) is when the falls run at full strength and the rafting operators are active; visit in the dry season (December-April) instead for calmer, shallower swimming pools.

Watch out: The trail has no lighting or facilities, and phone signal is patchy this far into Khuan Kalong district — bring cash, water, and let someone know your return time if you’re heading out with few other visitors around.
