Wang Nam Khiao Farm

Wang Nam Khiao Farm, known locally as Mister Mushroom, grows Reishi (Lingzhi), Lion’s Mane, cordyceps, oyster, shiitake and Japanese king trumpet mushrooms in air-conditioned cultivation rooms rather than open fields. It’s free to walk through, open daily 08:00-17:00, on the outskirts of Wang Nam Khiao district in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

What You’ll See

The farm walks visitors through the whole cultivation chain — spawn inoculation, substrate steaming, the fruiting rooms where the mushrooms actually grow, and the processing area where the harvest gets turned into shop-ready products. It started as one grower’s interest in health food around 2006 and opened to the public in 2008, since building out into one of the larger cold-climate mushroom operations in Isaan. Cordyceps and Lingzhi draw the most attention since both carry a premium in Thai traditional medicine, but the fruiting rooms for oyster and king trumpet mushrooms are the more visually striking stop — trays of them growing in dense clusters under controlled humidity.

Atmosphere & Timing

This is a working farm set up for visitors, not a manicured garden — expect functional greenhouse-style buildings rather than a landscaped setting. Mornings before the day heats up are the more comfortable time to walk the growing rooms, and the shop at the end sells the farm’s own dried mushrooms, mushroom-based teas, snacks and skincare products, which is where most visits end up.

Practical

The farm sits on the Wang Nam Khiao stretch of Nakhon Ratchasima’s mushroom and produce circuit, easy to fold into a wider Korat countryside day alongside Village Farm and Winery or Mae Mon Farm Cafe.

Insider Tip: Ask the shop staff which mushroom is in season for tasting — the farm rotates what’s ready to sample based on the current harvest cycle rather than keeping a fixed menu.

Watch out: You’ll see Wang Nam Khiao marketed as having the world’s seventh-cleanest air. A Chulalongkorn University biologist has publicly debunked this — it conflates the 1976 UNESCO biosphere-reserve status of the nearby Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (one of seven such reserves in Asia at the time) with an unrelated ozone-ranking claim. The area’s air quality is genuinely good for a rural district, but the “7th in the world” figure isn’t real.
