Wat Analayo Thipphayaram (Doi Butsarakham)

Wat Analayo Thipphayaram sits on top of Doi Butsarakham, a hill on the northern edge of Phayao town, and it’s a modern temple rather than a historic one — built by the monk Phra Ajarn Phai Sumangalo, who founded it after a vision led him here from across Kwan Phayao, the lake that dominates the town below.

The temple belongs to the Dhammayuttika Nikaya order, and its buildings mix styles rather than sticking to one tradition. Sukhothai-style Buddha images sit inside halls built with Lanna, Burmese, and Thai Yai architectural details; a stupa modelled on Indian Buddhist design stands apart from a Chinese-style shrine housing a statue of Guan Yu; and a gold-toned replica of the Emerald Buddha’s chapel adds another layer entirely. It’s less a single coherent style than a hilltop assembly of different Buddhist traditions, which is part of what makes it worth the climb.

From the temple grounds, the outlook runs across Phayao town and the lake basin below, and the elevation brings a cooler, breezier air than the valley floor. Early morning is quietest, before the midday sun flattens the light and the hilltop heats up with no real shade to speak of.

Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering any hall. The drive up is a winding hill road, so take it slowly on a motorbike, and carry water since the summit offers little shelter from the sun. Combine the visit with Phayao town itself and the lakeside Wat Si Khom Kham, home to the province’s well-known seated Buddha, both around 8 km from the hilltop.
