Wat Phra That Chom Thong

Wat Phra That Chom Thong crowns Doi Chom Thong, a hill about 3 km from central Phayao, directly across from Wat Si Khom Kham at the foot of the same rise. The temple’s centrepiece is a 30-metre Lanna-style chedi on a three-tiered square base, each side 9 metres wide, its lower tier sheathed in metal panels worked with the 12-animal zodiac and Thai relief patterns. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily, 08:00 to 17:00.

The chedi’s form echoes Phra That Hariphunchai in Lamphun — the same tiered-umbrella profile rising from a squared platform. Temple tradition holds it enshrines a strand of the Buddha’s hair and a relic of his right hand, sealed inside by two local rulers after the site was consecrated; that account comes from oral temple history rather than an inscribed record, so treat it as legend rather than fact. A Buddha image hall beside the chedi houses the temple’s principal images and a guardian-spirit shrine, both active in daily worship.

Insider Tip: The hillside skywalk and bell-tower deck, a short climb past the chedi, is the real reason to time a visit for late afternoon — it looks straight out over Kwan Phayao, the largest natural freshwater lake in the north, with the town’s rooftops below. Few of the temple’s day visitors bother with the extra few minutes uphill.

A paved road leads to a car park near the base; from there, stone steps climb to the chedi platform, steep enough that sandals with grip beat flip-flops. Shoulders and knees should be covered before stepping onto the platform itself — it’s an active place of worship, not a ruin. Mornings are quieter than afternoon, when tour vans from Phayao town’s lakefront hotels tend to arrive.

Watch out: The name is shared. Chiang Rai’s Wat Phra That Chom Thong is the more famous of the three temples with this name nationally — it holds that city’s lak mueang (city pillar) — and Chiang Mai has its own separate Wat Phra That Chom Thong as well. All three are unrelated sites in different provinces; this page covers only the Phayao temple on Doi Chom Thong.
