Wat Karuna

Wat Karuna, in Ban Bang Luang subdistrict near Sapphaya, is best known for one thing: Luang Pho Hin Yai, a sandstone Buddha image billed as the largest of its kind in Chainat province. People come specifically to make offerings for prosperity, land deals and business ventures in front of it — this is a working devotional site rather than an architectural showpiece.

The temple itself has moved once. The original Wat Karuna stood near Bung Bang Krabian, founded in the mid-1800s. When the Royal Irrigation Department built the Chao Phraya Dam nearby in 1953, the site had to relocate — the community re-established the temple at a disused former monastery site and carried the name Wat Karuna with it. That history explains why the current grounds feel relatively modern next to some of the province’s older wats: much of what’s here postdates the mid-20th-century move.

Beyond Luang Pho Hin Yai, the grounds are modest — a working monastery with resident monks, functional rather than ornate, set in the flat river landscape typical of this stretch of the Chao Phraya. It suits visitors already in the area for the Chao Phraya Dam rather than a dedicated detour on its own.
