Chao Phraya Dam is a barrage across the Chao Phraya River in Sapphaya district, Chai Nat, built between 1952 and 1957 as Thailand’s first large-scale irrigation dam. It doesn’t impound a big reservoir — instead it raises the river level enough to feed irrigation canals across 17 central-plains provinces. Entry is free, and the site is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00.

Most visitors walk the dam crest, a paved road running the width of the barrage, to watch the gated spillways release water and look out over the Chainat countryside on both sides. Fishing is popular along the banks below the dam, where anglers cast for snakehead and other freshwater species drawn to the churned water. A short stretch of riverside grass near the dam gets used for weekend picnics by families from Chai Nat town and nearby Sapphaya.

Insider Tip: Time your visit around the Chao Phraya Dam Fish Market, which runs roughly 04:00-09:00 daily. Boats unload the night’s catch straight onto the bank, and by mid-morning the best fish is already sold.

This is working irrigation infrastructure, not a landscaped park, and it reads that way — steel gates, concrete, and the constant sound of moving water rather than manicured gardens. Watch out: shade is limited to a handful of trees near the parking area, so midday visits in the hot season (March-May) get uncomfortable fast. Early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable and gives better light for photos of the spillways.

The dam sits around 200 km north of Bangkok, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive via Highway 32 through Chai Nat town. There’s no direct public transport to the site, so a car, taxi, or rented motorbike from Chai Nat is the practical option. It works well as a stop-off between Bangkok and destinations further north, rather than a standalone day trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chao Phraya Dam free to visit?
Yes. There's no ticket booth — the dam crest, riverbank, and fish market are open access, daily 08:00-17:00.
Can you take a boat trip at Chao Phraya Dam?
No organized boat tours run here. Visitors walk the dam crest and fish from the banks; river traffic near the dam is mostly local fishing boats, not tourist cruises.
What is the Chao Phraya Dam Fish Market?
A riverside market where local fishers sell the morning's Chao Phraya River catch, running roughly 04:00 to 09:00 daily near the dam. Get there by 8 AM for the best selection.
How far is Chao Phraya Dam from Bangkok?
Around 200 km, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive north via Highway 32 through Chai Nat town. There's no direct public transport to the dam itself.
Does Chao Phraya Dam generate electricity?
It has a small EGAT hydropower unit (6 MW) built into the barrage, but its main job is irrigation — raising the river level to feed canals across 17 central-plains provinces, not power generation at scale.
