Wat Khao Suwan Pradit

Wat Khao Suwan Pradit sits on a hill in Don Sak district, Surat Thani, on land locals originally called Khao Lan — “the bare hill.” A monk named Ajarn Thong, who came from Songkhla, founded the temple here; a later Sangha chief of Surat Thani, Phra Ratcharattanakawi, renamed it Wat Khao Suwan Pradit for auspiciousness. Older residents still believe the hill is watched over by Pho Tan Yod Khao, a local guardian spirit tied to Khao Lan long before the temple existed.

A paved road climbs the hillside to a white chedi at the summit, which enshrines Buddha relics — so this is one of the rare hilltop temples in the region where you don’t have to walk up. Two viewpoint areas near the chedi have been developed in recent years, and on a clear day they open onto the Gulf of Thailand: the Don Sak ferry piers below, the coastline curving north and south, and Koh Samui and Koh Phangan sitting offshore. The estuary at Don Sak is one of the stretches of coast, alongside nearby Khanom, where small pods of Irrawaddy dolphins — locally called pink dolphins for their colouring — are occasionally spotted from shore or from boats; sightings aren’t guaranteed, but Don Sak Pier is one of the departure points for dolphin-watching trips.

Insider Tip: Time a visit for late afternoon rather than midday — the light is softer for the sea view, and the hilltop road stays shaded longer than the exposed lower car park.

There isn’t much documented beyond this — Wat Khao Suwan Pradit is a working village temple rather than a major pilgrimage site, and Thai-language sources describe it mainly as a local landmark and viewpoint rather than a temple with an elaborate history or a famous relic. Watch out: it’s a functioning monastery, so keep shoulders and knees covered and stay quiet near the chedi if monks are present.

Most visitors combine it with a stop at Koh Raet or Tham Khao Wang Thong, both a short drive away in Don Sak, since the temple itself is a quick 20-30 minute stop rather than a half-day destination. It works well as a coastal-view break for anyone travelling between the Don Sak ferry piers and Surat Thani town, or as an add-on for the Samui-Phangan ferry crossing.
