Wat Khangmai

วัดกลางใหม่

Surat Thani Reviewed Jul 2026
Entry Free

Wat Khangmai is a working community temple in Makham Tia, on the edge of Surat Thani town — free to enter, with a resident community of seven monks. It’s a wat ratsadon (a lay-founded community temple, not a royal one), registered within the local Mahanikaya temple network, and it sits on roughly 23 rai of grounds a short songthaew ride from the town centre.

There’s little published history on the temple’s founding, and no verified record of when its current buildings were constructed — so treat any claim of “ancient” architecture here with caution. What is documented and dated is more recent: in late 2025, Wat Khangmai hosted a temporary public enshrinement of Buddha relics from Bodh Gaya, India, open from 24 October to 17 November, drawing worshippers from across Surat Thani for a rare chance to pay respects near relics from the site of the Buddha’s enlightenment. It also took part in the province’s Kathina robe-offering ceremonies on 1 November 2025, when communities present new robes to monks at the close of the rains retreat.

Insider Tip: Morning is the only time worth planning around here — the alms round and morning chanting are the temple’s real activity. By midday it’s just quiet grounds with little to see.

Compared to Surat Thani’s better-documented temples — the hilltop chedi at Wat Khao Suwan Pradit or the historic ruins at Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya Ratchaworawihan — Wat Khangmai draws almost no foreign visitors. That’s also the honest appeal: no entrance fee, no crowds, and monks who are part of the neighbourhood rather than performing for a coach tour.

Watch out: Don’t expect a tourist-oriented visit — there’s no English signage, no gift shop, and no set programme for visitors. Go for the quiet, not for curated content.

Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) and remove your shoes before entering any hall, as at any Thai temple.
