Wat Nong Khun Chat

Wat Nong Khun Chat is a working community temple in Nong Chang district, Uthai Thani, with a history that traces back to 1821. It was founded under the leadership of a local figure named Khun Sanit and originally called Wat Sanit Thammatharam, later renamed Wat Nong Sawang after the surrounding village. The temple took its present name in 1922, when the district itself was reorganised and renamed Nong Chang — the temple’s name changed to match a nearby village called Nong Khun Chat.

The vihara houses several revered Buddha images, and a separate mondop enshrines a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, gilded in gold leaf by visitors who come to pay respect. The ordination hall carries carved wooden decoration on its windows and doors, modest rather than showpiece craftsmanship, in keeping with a temple that has always served its immediate community rather than pilgrims from further afield.

Insider Tip: The temple runs its own local museum — displaying antique household items, farm tools, old weapons including bows and swords, and historic currency from different eras. It’s a genuinely local collection rather than a curated tourist exhibit, generally open daily from around 09:00 to 16:00.

Once a year, the temple hosts a Buddha footprint worship fair on the 12th waning moon of the third lunar month, running ten days and nights with stalls and local entertainment — worth checking dates if you’re planning around Uthai Thani’s calendar, since it moves with the lunar cycle rather than falling on a fixed date. Outside festival time, the grounds are quiet, with monks going about ordinary temple routines and little tourist traffic.

Watch out: This is rural Uthai Thani — public transport options to reach the temple are limited, and having your own car or arranging a taxi from town is the more reliable option than relying on local transit.

Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the vihara or mondop.
