Wat Klai Kangwon (Khao Saraphatdi Si Charoen Tham)

Wat Klai Kangwon in Hankha shares its name with the royal palace in Hua Hin, but the two have no connection — this is a separate Buddhist temple on Khao Saraphatdi hill in Ban Chian subdistrict, Chainat, on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. It’s a working temple built around an ancient site that stood abandoned before being restored, and its main draw is a decorated cave shrine set into the hillside rather than any royal history.

The cave isn’t a natural limestone formation — it’s an ornamental grotto, built into the hill and faced with sandstone and inlaid mirror tile that catches the light and glitters rather than a cavern carved by water over centuries. Inside sit Buddha images and a mondop-style shrine holding a Buddha footprint replica that visitors gild with gold leaf. Reviewers describe a 360-degree view from parts of the hillside, and the effect at night — when the grotto is lit — is closer to a themed installation than a conventional Thai wat interior.

Insider Tip: Bring small change for the animal-feed stall. Peacocks and barking deer wander the temple grounds freely rather than being penned, and there’s also a raft on the Chao Phraya riverbank where you can feed the fish — a genuinely different way to spend twenty minutes than most temple visits offer.

Outside the cave, the grounds sit in the shade of mature trees along the riverbank, with space to walk and a quieter, more rural feel than temples closer to Bangkok. Because it sits on the Chao Phraya, the site doubles as a scenic river stop as much as a religious one — worth building in time to just sit by the water rather than treating it as a five-minute photo stop.

Watch out: The mirror-tiled cave interior can be dim in places. A phone flashlight is enough to see the details properly, and the floor can be uneven in spots, so watch your footing.

The temple sits roughly half an hour from Chainat town by car or motorbike. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the shrine buildings.
