Wat Nong Hoi

Wat Nong Hoi Phra Aram Luang is a royal-status Buddhist temple established in 1873 on Khao Raeng mountain, roughly 12 km from Ratchaburi city centre. The site spans two adjacent hilltops and draws devotees for both Thai Buddhist and Chinese religious practice, making it one of the more distinctive pilgrimage temples in western Thailand.

The principal attraction is a 16-metre-tall Guanyin statue with a nine-metre chest width, housed in a hillside wihan dedicated to Avalokitesvara. Known locally as Khao Chao Mae Kuan Im Wat Nong Hoi, this shrine is the focus of merit-making visits, particularly during Chinese New Year when the temple holds its main annual celebration. On the opposite summit stands Phra Phuttha Rattanakosin Mahamuni, a large Buddha image known as Luang Pho Yai, which draws merit-makers of its own.

The elevated setting gives views across the surrounding lowlands — mostly rice fields — that stretch to the horizon on clear days. Monkeys are a constant presence on the grounds and the approach road; they are bold and quick to take food and unsecured belongings, so keep bags closed. Most visitors drive up rather than walk, and parking is free and ample.

Opening hours are roughly 06:30 to 17:00, though some sources cite 07:00 to 18:00 — call ahead on 032-206873 to confirm. Entry is free for all visitors. Reach the temple via Highway 3089 to the Khao Raeng road; the entrance is about half a kilometre from the main road. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering any prayer hall.
