Wat Saranat Thammaram

Wat Saranat Thammaram was built in 1944 by Phra Mahaviriya Ratchamangkalacharya, the former abbot of Wat Sampanthawong in Bangkok, as one of several sister temples he founded around Rayong province in the Thammayut tradition. The ordination hall’s principal Buddha image is a deliberate copy of Luang Pho Tha, the revered statue at Wat Mahathat in Phitsanulok — a common practice for Thammayut temples of this era, which often replicated images from senior monasteries to signal their lineage.

The four corners of the ordination hall carry scaled-down replicas of some of Thailand’s most significant Buddhist monuments: Phra Pathom Chedi from Nakhon Pathom, Phra That Phanom from Nakhon Phanom, a Bodh Gaya stupa replica, and Phra Borom That Chaiya from Surat Thani. It’s an unusual way to build a single hall — rather than one architectural style, the temple compresses references to four separate pilgrimage sites into its own structure.

The 1944 founding date places Wat Saranat Thammaram in a specific wave of temple-building: Rayong’s Thammayut network expanded through the 1940s as senior Bangkok monks, Phra Mahaviriya Ratchamangkalacharya among them, established provincial branch temples to extend the order’s reach beyond the capital. Klaeng, a district with an older fishing and orchard economy than the resort coast further west, absorbed several of these temples without becoming a pilgrimage circuit in its own right — which is part of why Wat Saranat Thammaram remains a genuinely local place of worship rather than a stop built around visitor footfall.

Watch out: Older listings describe this as a hillside site with rock-carved Buddha images — that doesn’t match what’s documented about the temple today, so don’t plan a visit around scrambling over rock formations. It’s a standard town-adjacent ordination hall and grounds.

The temple sits in Klaeng district, a 30-40 minute drive from the Mae Phim Beach area.
