Wat Si Bun Rueang (Ban Tai)

Wat Si Bun Rueang sits on Samran Chai Khong Tai Road in Mukdahan town, close enough to the Mekong that the river is visible from the temple grounds. Its main draw is Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Sing Song, a bronze Buddha image in the bhumisparsha (earth-touching) posture housed in the wihan — local history holds that it arrived from Vientiane in the late 18th century, brought by Thao Kinari, the founder of modern Mukdahan. It’s regarded as one of the province’s most revered Buddha images, and every April it leaves the wihan to be carried through town during Mukdahan’s Songkran procession.

The temple complex itself is modest: a modern ubosot (ordination hall) and the wihan stand side by side, with the wihan’s gable carved with Vishnu riding his mount Garuda — an unusual pairing of Hindu iconography on a Theravada Buddhist building, worth a second look if you’re interested in the region’s mixed Lao-Isan religious art. Day to day, this is a working neighbourhood temple rather than a tourist stop — expect a quiet compound with locals coming to make merit rather than tour buses.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Wat Si Mongkhon Tai, a separate Mukdahan temple about a kilometre away near the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge — similar province, different temple, different Buddha image.

Insider Tip: If your trip lands in mid-April, time a visit around the Songkran procession — seeing Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Sing Song carried through town is a far more memorable encounter than viewing the statue in the wihan on an ordinary day.
