Wat Thep Nimit Songtham

Wat Thep Nimit Songtham is a limestone cave with a temple built around and inside it, known locally as Tham Bo Ya (Bo Ya Cave) in Nong Krot subdistrict, about 30 km from Nakhon Sawan city. Reaching the cave mouth takes a climb of roughly 300 steps up a hillside stairway — there’s no vehicle access, so the walk up is the first part of any visit. Entry is free, and the site is open daily from 07:00 to 18:00. The turn-off for the final approach road is marked by Wat Si Uthumphon, a landmark temple in the same subdistrict, about 6 km before the cave itself.

Inside, the cave runs through three connected chambers. The first is the main shrine room: a principal Buddha image sits among natural stalactites and stalagmites, flanked by statues of Hindu deities — Shiva, Lakshmi, and Kali — plus hermit (ruesi) figures, a folk-religious layer that’s common at Thai cave shrines but not something you see at a standard temple. The second chamber holds a natural spring pool that locals treat as a sacred well, believed to carry protective or medicinal properties; visitors sometimes collect a small amount of the water. The third chamber serves as the exit route back down.

Local folklore around the cave centres on guardian spirits: stories describe encounters with two large, crested serpents said to protect the site, and older accounts describe the cave as having housed a genuine snake population before they moved on to the surrounding hills. Whether or not those details hold up to scrutiny, they’re part of why the cave draws visitors beyond routine merit-making — it has the reputation of a place with something watching over it, distinct from Nakhon Sawan’s more conventional riverside temples.

Watch out: The 300-step climb is steep in places and largely uncovered — go early to avoid the worst of the midday heat, and wear shoes with real grip rather than sandals.

Insider Tip: Bring a torch or use your phone’s light for the second and third chambers — natural light from the entrance doesn’t reach far past the first room, and the uneven cave floor is easier to read with a direct beam.

There’s no direct public transport to the cave, so pair the trip with your own vehicle or a hired driver based out of Nakhon Sawan, using Wat Si Uthumphon as the last landmark before the turn-off.
