Bangkok to Koh Samui is Thailand’s classic money-versus-time decision. The island’s airport is small, pretty and expensive to fly into — Bangkok Airways owns it and operates most of the schedule — so the overland route survives not as a hardship but as a genuine choice: an overnight leg south, then a ferry across, for a fraction of the airfare.

The train is the more comfortable night; the bus combos are usually cheaper and put you on the island earlier.
