Koh Samui to Koh Phangan is one of the shortest crossings in Thailand — the islands are close enough to see each other — but the booking still has two decisions in it: which Samui pier you leave from, and which Phangan pier you land at. Get those right and the trip is half an hour; get them wrong and you add taxi legs on both ends.
We link 12Go here because several operators run the route from different piers, and a comparison view answers the real question — the best departure for where you are staying — faster than checking each operator’s timetable separately. Lomprayah’s fast catamarans leave from Maenam, Seatran Discovery from Bangrak, and Songserm calls at Nathon; nearly everything arrives at Thong Sala, Phangan’s main pier.
The exception worth knowing about is the Haad Rin Queen, a modest boat from Bangrak that lands at Haad Rin directly. If you are staying on Phangan’s party beach, it saves the 20-30 minute songthaew ride across from Thong Sala, and it is usually the cheapest ticket on the route. It runs only a few times a day and skips rough weather, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.
Timing matters more than price on this route. Regular ferries finish by late afternoon, so a lazy start from Samui can quietly close your options. On Full Moon Party nights, dedicated speedboats fill the gap — out in the evening, back from Haad Rin in the early hours — at party prices. They work, but they are a different product from the day ferries on this page, usually sold as a return package with hotel pickup on Samui.
If you are still building the island leg of the trip, start with the Koh Samui guide and Koh Phangan guide, and check where to stay on Haad Rin if the party beach is the goal. Arriving from the mainland instead? The Surat Thani to Koh Samui ferry page covers that longer leg.
Insider Tip: Match the pier to your Samui hotel before you look at times. From Chaweng or Bophut, Bangrak departures are usually closest; from the north-west coast, Maenam or Nathon saves the pre-ferry taxi.
Watch out: Seas pick up in the late-year monsoon months, and the smaller fast boats cancel first. If you have a flight the next day, take an earlier crossing rather than the last one.
