The Experience

Three days at Scuba Birds Diving Center on Koh Tao take you from non-diver to certified PADI Open Water Diver, the entry-level certification recognised worldwide. The course pairs classroom and confined-water basics with open-water dives, building toward the certificate and a Scuba Birds log book you keep afterward. It’s one of the higher-rated ways to get certified on an island built around diving.

What to Expect

You check in directly at the Scuba Birds center rather than through a hotel pickup, with groups capped at 10 students. Scuba equipment is included for the full course, and boat days come with drinking water, tea, coffee, fruit and cookies, useful since you’re in and out of the water for hours at a stretch. Difficulty is rated moderate: no prior diving experience is needed, but you should be a confident swimmer going in. The course spans all 3 days, so plan to base yourself on Koh Tao for the duration rather than a day trip.

Who It’s For

Ideal for first-time divers who want a real qualification rather than a one-off discovery dive, and who can commit 3 full days on the island. Less ideal if you’re only passing through Koh Tao briefly, or if you’re not fully comfortable in open water. A first certification course is not the place to push past that.

Safety Tip: Stay within your training and never exceed the depth or conditions your instructor sets during the open-water dives. Good habits built in these first 3 days carry into every dive after.
