The Experience: the first stop is Ban Huai I-Ko, where Akha, Meo, Lisu, Karen, and Palong — all five communities — are visited at Ban Huai I-Ko; a local guide from the villages leads the visit through homes, gardens, and a school rather than a staged display. From there the group heads into Chiang Dao Cave, one of the largest in the area, carrying lanterns past stalagmites and stalactites with a local cave guide. The day closes at a greenhouse farm where butterflies move freely among orchids and other flowering plants.
An air-conditioned vehicle, a licensed English-speaking guide, and separate local guides at the villages and the cave are all included, along with the cave entrance fee; meals and personal expenses are not, so plan to buy lunch along the way. Gratuities for the driver and guides are appreciated but not required.
