Climb Sticky Waterfall Like a Spiderman

Bua Tong — known locally as the Sticky Waterfall — sits about an hour north of Chiang Mai and is genuinely odd: the limestone surface is porous and grippy enough that you can walk up the cascading water in bare feet without slipping. This four-hour trip handles hotel pickup, transfer in an air-conditioned vehicle, a local guide who stays with you during the climb, and a meal at a local restaurant on the way back.

The waterfall drops in several tiers through shaded jungle, and the climb is more scramble than hike — you move up the wet rock using natural handholds and the friction of the mineral surface. Your guide points out where the grip is best and where the moss-covered patches are actually slippery (they’re the dark green ones; the sandy-coloured limestone is the trustworthy stuff). There are cool pools at each level to swim in, and the whole site feels quieter than the better-known Chiang Mai waterfalls because it’s further off the main tourist loop. The pools at the top are the reward once you’ve worked up.

Two departure slots run — 8am and 1pm — and the morning option is cooler and less busy at the falls, worth choosing in hot season. Wear swim gear under clothes you don’t mind getting wet, leave expensive gear in the vehicle, and note the climb isn’t difficult but does want reasonable balance and no fear of heights on the upper tiers. Accident insurance and hotel pickup are bundled in; alcoholic drinks at the restaurant lunch aren’t. Bring a small dry bag for phones and a change of dry clothes for the ride back. Not great for very young kids or anyone with knee issues.
