This private tour takes you from Bangkok to two big sights in Samut Prakan: the Erawan Museum, housed inside a giant three-headed elephant, and the Ancient City, an open-air museum of Thai architecture. It runs about six hours with hotel pickup, an English-speaking guide and both entry tickets.

Key Facts
  • Duration: about 6 hours
  • Group: private
  • Includes: hotel pickup and drop-off in Bangkok, guide, vehicle, entrance tickets; Thai buffet lunch with that option
  • Excludes: food and drinks otherwise, tips

The Erawan Museum

The museum is a 43-metre three-headed elephant, the mount of the god Indra, standing over Sukhumvit Sai Kao Road. Inside, it climbs through three levels: the underworld chamber at ground level, the earth level in the elephant’s belly under a stained-glass dome, and a shrine room in its head. Plan on about two hours here.

The Ancient City

The Ancient City, also called Mueang Boran, spreads over a huge park shaped like a map of Thailand. Its buildings are scaled-down replicas or rebuilt originals of temples, palaces and city sites from across the country and its history. The site is too big to walk in a few hours, so the guide works through the highlights over about four hours.

Watch out: Ticket prices here are foreigner rates. Thai nationals in your group pay separately at each counter.

Who It Suits

It suits travellers who have done the Grand Palace and want a different side of Thai art and history, and families: the operator rates the tour wheelchair accessible and fine for prams.

Insider Tip: Bring sun protection and comfortable shoes for the Ancient City. Most of the visit is outdoors, and shade is patchy between the zones.
