This PADI Open Water course on Koh Phi Phi is run by Blue View Divers and splits the theory from the diving. You study the PADI eLearning (8 to 12 hours, on an app or PC) before you arrive, then finish the practical side in about two days. The operator runs small classes.

You check in at the dive centre one day before, at Viewpoint Resort, about five minutes outside town. Training starts with confined-water skills off the beach, plus swim tests and theory. Once those are signed off, you head to the boat for the open-water dives.

There are four dives over two days. Each boat trip is about five hours with two dives and lunch between them. The boat leaves from the main pier after the National Park fee is paid, then runs 20 to 30 minutes to the Marine Park area of Phi Phi Leh and Bida Islands. The operator mentions a good chance of sharks and turtles. You log the dives back on shore.

Included are SCUBA equipment, PADI eLearning and certification fees, a dive computer, tea and coffee, and basic insurance. The 800 THB National Park fee is extra.

Insider Tip: The operator recommends three days and says to book three nights of accommodation. Two days works only if your eLearning is already finished, so do it before you travel.

Safety Tip: Read the diver medical statement before booking. Any “yes” answer needs a doctor’s clearance before the course starts. Do not fly within 24 hours of your last dive.

This suits beginners who want to certify without spending a week of the holiday in a classroom, and who are comfortable doing homework first. For a shorter try-out, see the half-day Discover Scuba.
