This is a private charter timed to reach Maya Bay before the day-boats: Koh Phi Phi’s most photographed stretch of water reads differently at sunrise. The boat leaves Phuket’s marina and works through eight stops across 8 hours: Maya Bay first (60 minutes), then, tide permitting, the limestone-walled Pileh Lagoon (45 minutes).
A slow pass by the local beach shows the resident long-tailed macaque troop from the boat, and the nearby Viking Cave, used for edible bird’s-nest harvesting, is viewed from the water rather than entered. Two snorkelling stops follow (45 minutes each), where reef sharks are a regular sighting and whale sharks or dolphins turn up occasionally. The penultimate stop alternates between Bamboo Island and Koh Rang Yai depending on conditions, before lunch back at the operator’s pool club (45 minutes).
The base price covers the first two adults; each extra adult adds 2,000 baht and each child aged 4-12 adds 1,500 baht. Breakfast, lunch, soft drinks, snacks, WiFi, national park fees and onboard restrooms are included; alcohol and crew gratuities are not. In August and September, when the national park closes Maya Bay’s beach to let it recover, the stop becomes a view-only pass and Bamboo Island is added in its place.
- Duration: 8 hours, private charter
- Group size: Boat holds up to 15 people
- Route: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, monkey-beach and Viking Cave viewing, two snorkel stops, Bamboo Island or Koh Rang Yai, pool club lunch
Insider Tip: The appeal here is arriving at Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon ahead of the day-tripper fleet. Confirm your exact pickup time in Phuket the night before, since a late start erases the advantage.
Itinerary
Depart from Phuket's most accessible marina
Phi Phi Island Tour’s first glimpse of magic - Maya Bay Phi Phi Maya Bay has been a "must sightseeing location" for hordes of tourists for decades and, as such, has suffered from its overuse. Thankfully, the National Park prohibited, from 2018 to the end of 2021, any boat from dropping anchor in the bay and alighting at the beach to allow the gorgeous coral island treasures, wildlife, and environment time to recover. At Simba, you will be one of the first boats to arrive at this awe-inspiring bay to enjoy placing the first footprints of the day into its fine white sand. ***During the months of August, September, the Phi Phi National Park closes Maya Bay to tourists to allow some annual rejuvenation to the ecosystem. The stunning Bamboo Island is visited instead during these months. ***
Pi Leh Lagoon - Tide Dependent. The next stop on the sunrise tour, if the tide allows, is Pileh Lagoon before the crowds arrive. It's an emerald-green lagoon surrounded by high limestone cliffs on three sides. Bring an action camera to film or take photos of the emerald waters merging with the caves and the blue, clear horizon.
Macaque Monkeys and the Viking Cave. During the tour, the boat stops by one of the local beaches for a viewing of the monkey troop. For safety, guests stay on the boat while viewing the long-tailed macaques on the monkey beach. The Viking Cave is home to the special bird's nests used to make bird's nest soup. It is not possible to enter this large cave, but it can be seen from the outside, and you can see the armed guards protecting the birds' nests from looters.
1st Snorkeling Stop. Time for swimming and snorkeling during the speedboat tour. All snorkeling equipment is supplied, including fins and flotation aids such as life jackets and swim noodles. The staff are always there (in and out of the water) to help any first-timers with encouragement, advice, and sometimes just a helping hand throughout the day tour. In and around Phi Phi's waters, reef sharks are regularly seen and whale sharks, dolphins, and whales occasionally visit. With luck, these may be seen on the tour.
2nd Snorkeling Stop. Another snorkeling stop on the Phi Phi Island Tour. Subject to tide and weather conditions, snorkel through some caves to spot schools of baby fish hiding in shelter from their predators.
Bamboo Beach or Koh Rang Yai. The penultimate stop is selected depending on the conditions of the day, and the crew chooses between two tropical islands, Bamboo Island or Koh Rang Yai. Here, you can swim, bathe, relax, and take in the sights. Both have clear, calm waters, palm trees, and soft white sand. Take your time to enjoy the beach before the day ends.
The trip finishes with lunch at a pool club restaurant. A Thai-style lunch with local flavors of the island is served after a long day of sea activities.
