Full Day Cycling Amazing Chiangrai countryside and the White temple

5.0 (54 reviews) Top rated

Highlights

  • Visit the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)
  • Downhill mountain bike descent
  • Thai lunch at a local restaurant
  • English-speaking licensed guide

Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai’s surreal white temple designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, is the day’s anchor but the point of this tour is everything between it. An 8-9 hour cycling loop through Chiang Rai’s countryside on mountain bikes with 24 gears, covering paved roads and dirt tracks past villages, rice fields and small farms.

After hotel pickup within Chiang Rai city (covered pickup truck, longer transfers cost extra), you get your bike and helmet fitted at the starting point before heading out into the countryside with an English-speaking cycling guide. The ride rolls through rural lanes past working rice fields, small farms and village life, with a tea plantation stop that explains how the northern hills produce oolong and green tea. Wat Rong Khun itself is the mid-route landmark, all-white with mirror inlays and surreal contemporary details like Batman and pop-culture murals inside. A Big Buddha statue and local market round out the stops. Thai lunch, snacks and bottled water are included.

Good all-round fitness required, though the terrain is mostly flat to rolling rather than mountain. Bike gears make longer climbs manageable. Wear padded shorts if you have them and closed shoes. Sun protection is essential as much of the ride runs through open countryside. Gratuities and hotel transfers for hotels more than 3km outside Chiang Rai city aren’t covered. The 5.0 rating across 54 reviews is unusually strong for an active tour. The countryside routes mostly avoid traffic, which matters because Chiang Rai’s main roads aren’t cycle-friendly. Mountain bikes with 24 gears, helmet, English-speaking cycling guide, snacks, lunch, bottled water and free pickup for in-city hotels are all included. Plenty of water stops are built into the day, important when temperatures push into the 30s.
