Chiang Rai Temples: Private Tour from Chiang Mai
Availability checked
Chiang Rai is three hours north of Chiang Mai by road, and the three headline temples sit within a 20-minute radius of each other once you’re there, so a private day trip with a driver-guide is the standard way to see them. Thirteen hours door to door is honest about the travel time. What you’re buying is the comfort of air-con, no driving on unfamiliar mountain roads, and a guide who understands the three temples’ different stories.
The itinerary covers Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple), Chalermchai Kositpipat’s ongoing mirror-glass masterwork with contemporary scenes of pop culture and hell painted into traditional Buddhist iconography; Wat Huay Pla Kang, the Red Chinese Temple with its enormous white Guanyin statue visible from half of Chiang Rai; and Wat Seang Kaew Phothiyan with the largest monk monument in the region. Lunch at a local Thai restaurant, bottled water, hotel pickup and drop-off from Chiang Mai hotels, and the White Temple’s entrance fee are all included. Private tour means it’s just your party with the guide.
Pickup from Chiang Mai hotels is usually between 7 and 8am, with return in the evening. Groups go up to 15 but it’s your group only. Wear cover-shoulders, cover-knees clothing for the temple stops; all three have strict dress codes and you’ll be turned away in vest and shorts.
The three hours each way is genuinely tiring, and if you have four nights in Chiang Mai and want to keep energy for other things, you might consider doing Chiang Rai as an overnight instead. If you’re committed to a single-day, the private format keeps the pace under your control: more time at the White Temple if you want it, less at the Red if you don’t, and breaks when you want them rather than on a group schedule.
