Wat Rong Khun — the ghost-white, mirror-studded temple designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat — sits about 13km south of Chiang Rai city, and this half-day bike tour turns the approach into the main event rather than treating the temple as a quick photo stop. Four to five hours, mix of paved roads and dirt tracks, mountain bike with 24 gears and helmet supplied.
The route threads through villages, rice fields, and small farms on the edge of the city, with a local English-speaking cycling guide setting the pace and flagging the turns. The riding is gentle rather than technical — the 24-gear mountain bikes handle both the sealed back roads and the dirt farm tracks without drama — and the guide stops often to explain what you’re seeing: the irrigation of the rice paddies, small rubber plots, village temples you wouldn’t find on your own. You arrive at Wat Rong Khun by bike and have time there before the transfer back. Lunch, snacks, and bottled water come with the package.
Free hotel pickup covers stays in central Chiang Rai; accommodation more than 3km out incurs an extra charge. It’s a good fit for reasonably fit travellers of any age — the distance isn’t huge and the terrain is mostly flat. Wear light clothes, bring sunscreen, and pack a sarong or long-sleeved layer for the temple (Wat Rong Khun enforces a modest dress code at the entry). Gratuities for the guide aren’t included but are appreciated. The pickup truck that transports gear between stops doubles as shelter if the sky opens up in wet season. Morning departures run cooler than afternoons.
Itinerary
Stop
A covered pick up truck will transfer you to our office where we start the tour. it takes about 15 minutes. After a short safety briefing and personalized bicycle fitting, we begin our cycling through villages and rice fields and then follow the Lao River upstream. The bicycle ride is pleasant with much greenery due to the proximity of the river. While you are cycling you will discover the real rural Thailand and see local lifestyle on the outskirts of Chiang Rai. We will cycle past various fruit orchards, rice fields, rubber plantations and teak trees.
