Bangkok’s Thonburi side still functions the way the whole city used to, with wooden houses built over the khlongs and boats as basic transport. Two hours on a longtail here, taking in the enormous Big Buddha at Wat Paknam from the water and stopping at a local artist village, is one of the better short trips in the city. The Buddha is 69 metres tall and recently completed, and seeing it grow into view as you come around a canal bend is a different experience from viewing it at ground level with every tour group in Bangkok.

Meet 15 to 20 minutes early at the stated pickup spot; the recommendation is to take a Grab rather than a tuk-tuk, setting the destination to “Hidden Bangkok Tours”. From Itsaraphap MRT station (Blue Line) it’s a three-minute taxi or a 15-minute walk. You board a covered longtail for a loop through the Thonburi canal network, past wooden stilt houses, riverside temples, and small communities that have lived on these waterways for generations. The guide stops at an artist village where painters and sculptors work in open-air studios, and the Big Buddha view is framed from a quiet stretch of canal. English-speaking guide, bottled water and travel insurance included. Maximum 12 people per boat.

Hotel pickup isn’t included and food and drinks aren’t provided, though you can bring your own. Tips for the boat driver and guide are at your discretion.

One caveat worth reading. In the November to April high season, canal lock congestion can add 45 to 90 minutes of waiting on some routes. When that happens the team adjusts the route and drops you closer to the main street rather than leaving you baking in the sun beside a lock. It’s a rare enough problem that most trips run smoothly, but the operators are upfront about it. Morning and late afternoon are cooler and more photogenic.
