Ban Bang Son Community Base Tourism

Ban Bang Son sits on Khlong Bang Son in the Pathio district of Chumphon, about 30 minutes from Chumphon Airport, and runs one of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s “One Night Stay with Locals” homestay programmes through the community’s Ban Mai Chai Khlong homestay. Visiting the village itself is free; the standard two-day, one-night homestay package costs 1,890 THB per person for groups of two to four, dropping to 1,500 THB per person for five or more.

Experience

The day mixes fishing and farming with food: traditional net-casting on the canal, a look at small-scale rubber tapping in the surrounding orchards, and a southern Thai cooking session with local families. An open-air raft trip loaded with a seafood lunch runs down the khlong to the bay for sunset, then returns after dark for two of the programme’s highlights — fireflies lighting up the canal-side trees, and night fishing from the homestay’s own dock. A second option takes visitors by boat to Koh Kai (“Egg Island”) to snorkel and gather shellfish over coral at low tide. Between September and November, the community also runs trips to Khao Din Sor to watch migrating hawks pass overhead.

Atmosphere & Timing

This is a genuine working fishing village, not a staged show — expect real nets, real boats, and a slower pace than a day-trip itinerary allows. The community runs three linked programmes in total, from single-day visits up to the full overnight stay, so it’s worth asking which fits your schedule when booking. The overnight format matters here: day-trippers miss the firefly viewing and the early-morning fishing that only show up if you stay through the evening and following dawn.

Insider Tip: Book at least 15 days ahead — the homestay runs on a reservation system through 1nightstaywithlocals.com or hellolocal.asia, not walk-up availability.

Watch out: There’s no direct bus to the village. The community offers a 500 THB pickup/drop-off service from Pathio (Pa Thio) train station, on the overnight Bangkok–Chumphon line (roughly 12–13 hours, about 485 km).
