Paknam Langsuan Subdistrict

Paknam Langsuan is a fishing subdistrict at the mouth of the Lang Suan River, about 7km from Lang Suan town in southern Chumphon. It isn’t a single sight so much as a working harbour and river-mouth community — longtail boats, seafood restaurants, and a stretch of coast at Laem Sone Beach where the river meets the Gulf of Thailand. The subdistrict’s real claim to fame is what happens on the water each October.

The Lang Suan long-boat racing festival — locally called “khuen khon ching thong” (“climbing the prow, grabbing the flag”) — has been recorded here since the reign of King Rama III, close to two centuries of continuous tradition. Held over five days around the 11th lunar month, it combines processions of decorated Buddha images from local temples with competitive long-boat races on the river itself, drawing crowds from across Chumphon and neighbouring provinces. Outside festival dates, the river mouth reverts to its everyday rhythm: fishing boats coming and going, nets drying on the jetty, and small restaurants serving whatever came off the boats that morning.

Laem Sone Beach, on the subdistrict’s Gulf-facing shore, has a paved seafront walk favoured by locals for morning and evening exercise rather than sunbathing tourists — this is Gulf coast, not Andaman, and the beach reads as a working coastal edge to a fishing town rather than a resort strip. A short walk inland brings you to the temples and shrines that anchor the community’s boat-racing traditions.

Insider Tip: If you can time a visit around the boat races in October, do — outside festival week this is a low-key stop best combined with Laem Son Temple, which sits in the same Pak Nam subdistrict and hosts part of the boat procession.

Watch out: There’s no single “attraction” building or ticket gate here — Paknam Langsuan is a place to wander rather than a site to check off, and outside the festival week there isn’t much organised for visitors beyond the harbour and the beach walk.

Combine a visit with Laem Son Temple nearby, and check current-year festival dates before building a trip around the boat races — the lunar calendar shifts the exact week from year to year.
