Khao Din Sor is a roadside viewpoint hill on the Chumphon–Pathio road, about 7 km before Pathio town, with a paved 1 km climb to a cluster of rest huts and a 360-degree view over the coast. Entry is free, and it’s open daily 06:00–18:00.
Five huts sit at different levels along the ascent, each framing a different angle on the coastline below — on a clear day you can pick out three bays in sequence: Ao Bo Mao, Ao Thung Wua Laen, and Ao Saplee, with the Gulf of Thailand stretching out behind them. Past the huts, a roughly 1 km nature trail continues through light forest cover, an easy walk past ferns, moss-covered rock, and stands of native palm. It’s not a technical hike — more a gentle uphill stroll broken up by benches and shade.
The reason serious birders put this hill on a Thailand itinerary is the raptor migration. From September through November, hawks and other birds of prey funnel down this stretch of the Chumphon coastline on their way south for winter — some of them breeding as far away as Siberia, Japan, and China. Local watchers gather at the huts with binoculars and scopes during peak weeks, and the passage numbers here are large enough that Khao Din Sor turns up on serious birdwatching itineraries, not just general nature-trail lists. Outside migration season, expect a quieter mix of resident forest birds rather than a guaranteed wildlife show.
Insider Tip: Time a visit for late afternoon if you’re not here for the migration — the huts face west-ish toward the coast, and the light on Ao Thung Wua Laen in the hour before sunset is better than the flat glare of midday.
The hill’s name is unglamorous once you know it: “din sor” is simply the Thai word for pencil, a nod to the slim shape of the ridge rather than any legend. There’s no water or food sold on site, so bring your own, along with sun protection for the exposed upper huts. About 25 km north along the coast, inside the Bang Berd sand dune conservation area, sits another Khao Din Sor lookout tied to the same raptor migration — a separate spot with the same name, not this one, so double-check which “Khao Din Sor” a map pin or tour is pointing you toward before you drive out.
