Ban Lao Reung Herbal House, Prachinburi

Ban Lao Reung is a 1950s teak house in Mueang Prachin Buri that now works as both a herbal restaurant and a small heritage museum. The last owner, Dr. Purachai Piamsomboon, donated the family home to the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation — the same foundation behind Prachinburi’s well-known traditional-medicine hospital — which restored it as a public space rather than selling the land. Entry is free, and the name translates roughly as “the house that tells stories.”

The Piamsomboon family were merchants and minor nobility in old Prachin Buri; the house itself was rebuilt after a fire tore through the town market, and its wooden rooms now hold rotating exhibitions rather than a single fixed collection. One room traces royal visits to the province across several reigns. Another, titled “This House’s Strong Women,” is dedicated to Khun Proytip Piamsomboon, the family member who ran the household in its later years — her portrait and personal effects sit alongside a short account of her role locally. A third area explains the herbal ingredients that show up on the restaurant’s menu: turmeric, galangal, hibiscus, and the plants the Abhaibhubejhr Hospital has used in its dispensary for decades.

Insider Tip: The restaurant closes its kitchen around 19:00, half an hour before the house itself shuts — arrive by mid-afternoon if you want to eat something rather than just look through the rooms. Dishes run roughly 100-250 THB and lean toward herb-forward Thai food: tempura with edible flowers, spicy bamboo-shoot soup, and herbal cold drinks made with butterfly pea or hibiscus.

The house sits a short distance from the hospital itself and from Chao Phya Abhaibhubejhr building and Abhaibhubejhr Day Spa, which together form Prachinburi’s small cluster of herbal-heritage sites. It works well paired with Prachin Buri National Museum for a half-day covering the town’s history beyond the market and riverfront. There’s no dedicated parking lot; street parking nearby is the norm, and it’s an easy stop for anyone already in Prachin Buri for the hospital’s traditional-medicine programme.
