Betong Clock Tower

The Betong Clock Tower stands on a roundabout at the centre of Betong, Thailand’s southernmost town, built from marble quarried in Yala province. It’s free to visit at any hour and functions as the town’s default meeting point and navigation landmark — locals give directions relative to it rather than by street name.

The tower’s real drawing card isn’t the clockwork but the wildlife around it: from roughly September through March, thousands of migratory swallows arriving to escape colder climates further north perch on the power lines circling the roundabout. Locals have turned this into a running joke — getting hit by swallow droppings here supposedly guarantees you’ll return to Betong. Restaurants, souvenir shops and street-food vendors ring the roundabout, and the mix of Thai and Malaysian cooking smells reflects Betong’s position as a border town that’s drawn Chinese, Malaysian and Thai communities for generations.

Insider Tip: The tower is lit up after dark, which is when most people get their photos — pair an evening visit with dinner at one of the roundabout’s restaurants and, in swallow season, a look up at the wires before the light fades.

Watch out: There’s genuinely nothing to “do” here beyond photos and people-watching — treat it as a 15–20 minute stop woven into a longer walk through central Betong, not a standalone destination.

Because it’s an open public roundabout rather than a managed site, there are no opening hours, entrance fee, or facilities to plan around. The whole of central Betong is walkable, so most visitors reach the tower on foot from their hotel.
